Indoor Air Quality

shutterstock_156648308Have you ever wondered what the the V stands for in HVAC?  Ventilation!  Winter is the perfect time of year to talk about ventilation since it plays an extremely important role in your home’s indoor air quality.

All homes need air exchange in order to maintain healthy indoor air quality.  Stale air in the home must be replaced with clean air on a regular basis.

If you live in a old leaky New Englander, you are probably getting more than enough air exchange.   Air quality problems are usually found in well insulated, newer homes that are occupied by families who cook meals at home and run multiple showers a day.  If the home is not getting proper air exchange to remove odors from cooking and humidity from showers and laundry, poor indoor air quality will result.

If you think your home could benefit from bringing in fresh air, and you don’t want to open the windows during a February blizzard, you might consider having an Energy Recovery Ventilator ERV or Heat Recovery Ventilator HRV installed.  These systems will efficiently warm up fresh air before bringing it into the home using a method of heat exchange with the exhausted warm air.

We install both types of systems and can help you chose the best option to fit your needs.

Have a healthy, happy February!
